Anubis ancient Egyptian jackal deity carving. Guardian of the gate and guide in the afterlife, Anubis had a key role in evaluating the weight of one's deeds, determining the level of blessings which would be made available to them in the afterlife. One who had behaved poorly during their lifetime would depart this world with a heavy heart; whereas those who performed many kind acts during their lifetime would leave this world more lighthearted, gaining them access to the blessed realms. While usually depicted as male, Anubis was also sometimes depicted as a female, called Anput.
